Powertec Power Rack P-PR

Powertec Power Rack P-PR

The Powertec Power Rack P-PR is a sturdy, high-quality workout area designed to support up to 1,000 pounds of weight on the rack and as much as 400 pounds in human weight on the dip and pull-up bars. The freestanding device currently (at time of review) costs $675.00 on Amazon; however, shipping is free.

The 2014 model is the latest version, offering a more secure and reliable home gym. The built in chin-up and dip bars make it easy to throw in additional upper body workouts, and the Powertec P-PR is also compatible with high and low lat towers.

Best Features

The Powertec P-PR Power Rack has several features that make it one of the leading racks on the market.

  • Safety Bars: The two safety bars at the bottom provide an easy escape for when you try a squat that’s just a bit too heavy. The bars are fully adjustable, allowing the user to set them to the proper height so they don’t impede a full squat, but still protect the user.
  • Chin-Up and Dip Bars: Whether you’re trying to work out your lats or give the biceps an extra kick, the chin-up bars make it easy to do. When it’s the triceps you’re after, dips are the way to go. The additional bars attached to the exterior of the power rack make it easy to do.
  • Lifetime Warranty: This power rack brings with it a lifetime warranty on the frame. Should the frame ever bend under the weight of the workout or for any other reason, it will be replaced, no questions asked.
  • Easy Assembly: While you will need to put together the rack on your own, it’s easy to do so, even if DIY isn’t your thing.

The Good

Powertec Power Rack Side ViewThe Powertec P-PR is designed for customer satisfaction across the board. Because it provides spotter racks, you’re able to work out without fear of injury. This allows you to take on more weight than you might otherwise do. On the other hand, the assembly is a piece of cake – because it only needs one size of nut and bolt, there’s no need for a mess of tools. Another great benefit is the size. While still large enough for any one person, the rack is smaller than many others, allowing it to fit into homes with limited space, or into somewhere like a garage.

With dimensions of 44 x 82 x 60, it’s perfect for a spare bedroom or basement. This means there is still room leftover for the optional lat tower system to be attached, increasing the range of exercise even farther. Despite its strength and stability, the rack is rather lightweight at 203 pounds. While not really liftable, it can be moved around the room by a single person. Finally, the dip and chin-up bars are a great addition that vastly improves the utility of the power rack without making things more complicated than they need to be.

The Bad

However, it does have a few downsides. The light weight of the rack means that heavier people may feel some movement when doing pull ups or dips; however, this can be countered by weighting the rack a bit near the bottom. People of above average height may encounter problems attempting to do certain exercises because of the height of the rack.

Another slight problem is the powder coating. While sufficient, it’s lighter than it needs to be which can lead to the paint chipping rather easily. In any case, this equipment isn’t something someone buys for aesthetics, so this shouldn’t be a major problem. Some people do not like how the lat bars flair outwards, but that’s largely a matter of personal preference.

The Verdict

Overall, the Powertec P-PR Power Rack is a fantastic purchase for a home gym. After all, when you’re working without a spotter, safety is paramount. The spotter bars make it easy to take on challenges you wouldn’t otherwise, and the versatility of the various additions of the rack make it easy to get a full workout in for a relatively small investment. When you compare how much you may spend on a gym membership in a full year compared to the value a single, durable power rack provides, the choice is clear: go with a home gym. You’ll always have time to work out without needing to rush to the gym after work.
