The Good

Schwinn 270 SeatThis bicycle is built well and is sturdy, so users who weigh 300 pounds or fewer will not have to worry about experiencing too much of the slipping, sticking, shaking, or rattling that other riding bikes make. Adjusting the seat is easy, so even people who do not have much upper body strength will be able to adjust the seat settings without much trouble. The heart rate monitor only requires the user to grip the handles, so exercisers do not have to worry about dangly, inconvenient attachments to see their real-time heart rates.

Moving the bike is easy due to its 87-pound weight, transport handle, and transport wheels. The Dual LCD Window system allows the exerciser to monitor 13 different types of data feedback, including but not limited to: user profiles, rpm, distance, speed, resistance level, and calories burned. 29 different workout programs allow users to customize and vary their exercising experiences and 25 resistance levels can either be used as part of the pre-designed workout programs or toggled by users independently.

SchwinnConnect allows users to set and track goals and progress and to export data. The USB port allows users to charge electronic devices and/or to export data using the SchwinnConnect technology.  The seat bottom is padded, comfortable, and built so that exercisers of all body types can work out in comfort while sitting on it also is vented and offers enhanced lower back support, which is ideal for people who have had back trouble but who still want to exercise.

Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike LCD ScreenAcoustic chamber speakers are built into this recumbent bicycle in order to allow users to listen to music while working out. A 3-speed fan blows air on the exerciser’s chest and face, providing some coolness during even the hottest of workouts. The water bottle holder provides a convenient place for the user to put his or her drink for easy access during workouts.

This bicycle comes with a warranty that covers a variety of features. The frame is covered for 10 years, the mechanics for 2 years, the electronics for 1 year, and the labor for 90 days. Assembly is fairly easy and takes from between an hour to an hour and a half, which is not as long as some pieces of equipment take to put together.

The Bad

Some reviewers have complained of opening the box after delivery and discovering broken parts (often the console).  The heart rate monitor can be inaccurate when measured against another heart rate monitor. Some have also complained about shipping delays on the part of the manufacturer after notification of defective parts.

The fan is somewhat weak — even when raised to the highest setting.

If you’re eyes are sensitive, you may think the LCD display is too bright. Also, the 29 available workout programs can be difficult to navigate and use.

Some reviewers have had negative experiences with customer support such as being put on hold, being promised a part and not getting it, having to pay for new parts plus shipping, etc.

Other users have complained that they feel like they have paid for features they will never use as part of their workout routines.

The Verdict

While the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike has some flaws, these flaws can be fixed or overcome fairly easily. Parts can be replaced, and different people experience different things in terms of customer service and have different tastes in terms of things like cooling and brightness. The warranty on this bicycle should cover the cost of replacing parts, requiring only the investment of a little time to fix the bike.

This recumbent bicycle costs less than higher-end bikes, making it a good value due to all its features. It has become a fairly popular bike with many reviewers due to its sturdy build, comfortable seat, and variety of workout options. People who have experienced back trouble may find this recumbent bike to be a good exercise option thanks to the comfortable nature of the chair and ease of changing seat settings.

Exercisers in search of other recumbent bicycle options may want to consider buying the Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike since it has most of the same features as the Schwinn 270 but costs $100 less. Potential buyers should note that the 230 has 7 fewer programs, 2 fewer user accounts, and 5 fewer resistance levels than the 270.
