The Good

Muscletech Phase7 Supplement FactsDesigned specifically for muscle and not weight gain, the Phase8 formula is scientifically derived to release amino acids into the bloodstream over a period of 8 hours, creating a longer lasting muscle-building period. The best part of the blend is its focus on milk-derived protein sources. With hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, and micellar casein, the formula provides the body 26g of scientifically proven safe proteins used in repairing the body. Each serving also comes complete with 2.2g of glutamine and 4.6g of BCAAs.

Aside from the milk-based blend of ingredients, Phase8 also employed the expertise of the top flavoring houses’ top protein flavoring experts. All users agree that the taste is unbeatable. In a third party taste test, Phase 8 beat all of its competitors. This is also the first protein shake that does not taste terrible when mixed with water and does not use sugar. Even with such a great taste, there are no unnecessary carbs added to simply make it palatable, allowing you to drink your fill while easily maintaining your calorie count.

It can also be taken at any time and still be an effective protein source. Because the absorption process is extended, the amino acids are continually delivered at the rate your body needs them, be it pre- or post-workout. This long release rate makes it a highly anabolic and anti-catabolic compound that maintains a muscle-building environment for an extended period of time. It also consists of quick release amino acids for post-workout, medium release for between meals and slow release for night time, making it ideal for use at any point in the day.

Variety also plays a vital part in the effectiveness of this protein powder. With five different flavors, when you’re finished with one tub, you are not stuck with the same flavor for the next one. There are also 6 different tub size ranging from 2 pounds all the way to 4.5 pounds, allowing you to purchase the amount based on what you need and not what you have to buy.

The Bad

Though the flavor is heavily regarded as one of its best points, its texture is under much debate. Described as chalky and thick, the powder itself is very light and gets dust all over the place, so don’t run a ceiling fan while scooping it out. When added to water, milk or juice, it becomes super thick and hard to swallow for some. There are even reports of the mixture having a very strong artificial sugar flavor, which would explain the sweetened taste without any grams of sugar. It can be shaken and blended into a liquid but does not mix well at all, creating a sludge shortly after touching liquid. If texture is an important factor in purchasing a protein mix, Phase8 is not the safest choice.

Competitors are beginning to offer more than strictly protein in their mixes. From fiber to green coffee bean extract to provide chlorogenic acids for a beneficial effect on metabolism and the cardiovascular system, there are much more rounded out products out there that take into account the body needs more than just protein to build muscle. These blends are mostly created to benefit multiple exercise programs as opposed to one, sole feature.

The Verdict

MuscleTech’s Phase8 Formula is strictly a protein powder with the advantage of sustaining a muscle-building environment within the body for an extended period of time. Its great varieties of flavors and high-quality proteins give it an edge over competitors. However, if you are looking for more than a protein powder, Garden of Lifes’ Raw Fit and Pro Grade Weight Loss Whey are filled with extra vitamins and compounds to benefit other areas of the body. Unfortunately, multiple sources for compound derivatives means an increase in price.

For Phase8’s price range of about $30 to $50, it is lower than the average protein powder with the larger tubs affording better prices for larger amounts. Because it is an 8 hour formula, one scoop lasts a full day in comparison to the competitors that suggest taking their powder more than once per day. Even though the texture can be off putting and it is solely protein based, MuscleTech’s Phase8 formula is a solid, muscle-building supplement to add to your routine.
