How to start a fitness blog (in 3 easy steps)

By Tory Reiss / March 22, 2016

So you want to start a fitness blog? You’ve come to the right place! We’ll show you the smart and quick way to set up your new fitness blog. If you follow the steps below it should only take you about 15 minutes to get your website online.

Whether you’ve just started your fitness journey or fitness has been a big part of your life for awhile, you’re gaining a lot of knowledge as you continue down your path. Why not share what you learn along the way? Whether it’s to deepen your fitness practice, you’re trying to turn your passion for fitness into a profitable and sustainable business, or just for fun- a fitness blog is a great way to start!

Let’s get started…

1. Setup Domain Name and Hosting

Your domain name (example: yourdomainname.com) is like your online address and hosting is like renting a space for your website. Brainstorm a few different domain names then see which ones are available using Bluehost.

Once you’re on Bluehost (linked here), select the Basic plan, then search for your domain name, then continue to the final page!

Tip: Include a keyword in your domain name.
If you’ve become an expert in a specific area in fitness or have any keywords that describe your business, I recommend that you use them in your domain name.
Why Bluehost?
There are a lot of hosts that you can use but I highly suggest Bluehost. They’re affordable, scale with your online business, have amazing 24/7 customer support, have a money-back guarantee, AND a domain name is included for free!

2. Install WordPress

If you set up hosting through Bluehost then all you need to do to install WordPress is login to your Bluehost account, go to the Website Builders section, click on WordPress, click Install, and follow the steps! Told you this is easy 😉

Why WordPress?
There are many frameworks you can use to build your website, but my hands-down favorite is WordPress. WordPress is free, easy to learn, has a HUGE community of free support, and it can scale with you as your fitness blog grows. WordPress runs 1 in 4 of the websites online, so it’s also not going anywhere and only going to get better!

3. Customize Your New Fitness Blog to Fit Your Brand

This is a lot of fun, but don’t let it eat too much of your time! Make posting valuable content a priority.

Time to choose a theme! There are TONS of WordPress themes. Free and paid themes. I usually recommend a paid theme from one of the sources below since most come with great support- and you want to be focused on your business, not getting stuck on how to make changes to your theme. If you’d rather start with a free theme, you can use the theme that comes with WordPress or browse free themes here (linked).

Bonus Step: Create business cards to easily promote your new fitness blog

I’ve purchased business cards from a lot of different places but my go to is Moo (linked here). I’m frequently asked where I get my business cards because they’re such great quality. Plus, they have great customer support and they make it super easy to design and order.

Business cards are an easy way to share your new fitness blog with others as you go about your day. Share your business cards with your family, friends, clients, and potential clients. Point them to your website for answers to their fitness questions and consider turning questions you get often into some form of content. Whether it be an article, video, or graphic you can post it on your blog to share with others in the future.

You can also use Moo to create flyers, postcards, stickers, or other promotional stuff you can hand out, pin to public boards, or leave at your local gym (with their permission, of course).

That’s it! Next step: post useful content and spread the word!
