(this baby monkey is just getting started, too!)
Welcome! I’m Tim Priest, and I’m here to get you started on a life changing and rewarding fitness journey. If your new to dieting, working out, or looking to find some new motivation, you’ve come to the right place! Here in this blog I will help you make sense of what works (and what doesn’t) to help you lose weight, build muscle, and change your life.
Rules of SMF
Below are five simple philosophies that will explain what this blog is, why it’s different, and who it’s meant for.
This blog is not for everyone.
Please read these philosophies carefully so you can decide if the Smart Monkey Fitness blog is right for you.
Philosophy #1: We can only change the present and the future.
Everything that’s happened in your life up to this point can’t be changed. We will not dwell on the past. It doesn’t matter what failures you’ve had or setbacks you’ve experienced.
You are here.
It doesn’t matter if you are hundreds of pounds over weight, or fifty pounds under weight.
YOU made it here.
We all come from different cultures, social statuses, and backgrounds. Here, we don’t allow ourselves to use any of those things as excuses. We make commitments. We invent solutions. We work hard to become the people we want to be, and never use the past as a reason to give up.
We find balance between work, health, and our personal lives. We get adequate sleep and find ways to reduce stress that are so fundamental to our overall well-being.
We use mistakes as learning tools. When we fall down, we get back up. We crawl before we walk. If you internalize this, make it a reality, I want to welcome you to the first day of the rest of your life.
Philosophy#2: Once a Monkey, Always a Monkey.
We don’t follow magic diets. We don’t buy into fad gimmicks. We don’t just diet or a few days or weeks here and there. We are here to develop a lifestyle. A way of life that will enable you to become the best you that you can be. A confident, healthy, and strong you that inspires others with your dedication and choices. We know that every healthy choice adds up because small consistent changes WILL add up to huge changes that change your life for the better. Your friends may leave you behind. Your family may even disapprove of your healthy choices.
You have to lead by example.
It’s possible you might be on your own in real life. Here, you have friends. A brotherhood and sisterhood of people from all around the world who are ready to make the same sacrifice as you to let go of unhealthy choices, and want to see you become a success. Once a member, your in for life.
Philosophy#3: Making healthy food choices is a lifestyle, and your key to success.
We take the time to learn about proper nutrition. We learn how different types of food affect our health and body composition. We develop an understanding of key concepts and the roles that protein, fat, and carbohydrates play in our bodies so we that we can become educated monkeys who engineer their own success. Our nutrition philosophy is best described as a “Whole Foods Diet”, meaning that most foods we eat are minimally processed. Meat, fish, fruit, nuts, and seeds compose of the bulk of our nutritional intake. See the Paleo Diet.
Philosophy#4: Exercise and resistance training is not the enemy.
Fitness can play a lot of roles in your life. Swimming, climbing, cycling, running, lifting – We understand there is more than one path to success. We focus on incorporating exercise that is fun, challenging and unique to ourselves. We adapt new ideas and question everything to discover how our bodies respond. We build our bodies up to become the best we can be. We focus on functional strength to assist you in achieving a higher quality of life not only now, but also into old age. We want to stay lean – feeling and looking our best.
Philosophy#5: We are in this together.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a single weight in your life, have never run a mile, or have never had a vegetable.
We stay positive.
We’re here to support each other and to give back – Whether it’s your friends in real life, or your fellow members of the Smart Monkey Fitness nation. You offer a helping hand, a friendly push when someone needs encouragement. At the same time you understand tough love is sometimes needed to push our friends out of their comfort zone, and to become better off as a result.
This blog is designed to make you accountable for yourself. To help you become the author of your own success in health and in life. To give you the tools, knowledge, and support you need to make a lasting change, changes that are contagious and positive to not only you, but everyone around you.
We become better people.
Consider these important facts from the Center of Disease Control:
•More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) are obese.
•Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
•The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429
Many conditions, disabilities, and life threatening disease can be outright PREVENTED if you take action to improve your fitness and health, right now.
Are you in?
If all of this sounds like too much work and you’re looking at yourself and convincing yourself that you simply aren’t willing to make changes that lead to a healthier and more fulfilling life, no problem. I still want to thank you for reading this, and want to wish you the best of luck. We aren’t going anywhere. We will welcome you when you return.
I want to wrap up this introduction by letting you know I’m here for you, not only as an educator but also as a friend as you continue your journey to better health.
I will always do my best to respond all your email questions, feedback, and comments. I want to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained over the years to make the internet a positive and motivating place to help you reach your goals. I’m definitely not special or hold myself at a higher position than anyone else – I’m just a normal guy who has come to learn the value of hard work and commitment and in fact – I still have a lot of work to do myself! I am excited to continue my transformation with you and share the journey along the way.
I want to thank each and every person who stopped by, and appreciate your continued support. Stop by sometime and say hi to me on Facebook and Twitter! I look forward to seeing you soon.
