This product is a digital sports watch that uses GPS capabilities to track various athletic statistics. The Garmin Forerunner 910XT watch was released in 2011 and is an upgrade from Garmin’s previous 310XT model. It features the ability to track time, distance, pace, elevation, and heart rate changes over time. This watch is built to sustain heavy use in the toughest environments. It can be used even while swimming, running, and cycling. In addition to all the features, the watch boasts a 20-hour battery life. This Garmin Forerunner 910XT watch comes in the color black and is currently available for the price of only $333.25, which includes free shipping.
- GPS enabled tracking
- Ability to track many athletic statistics such as distance and heart rate
- Water proof up to 50m
- Simple conversion from watch to attachment to bike
- 20 hour battery life
- Custom vibration alerts when training
- Statistics can be separated by sport type
This watch makes some pretty big claims. The most impressive being the ability to withstand water for up to 50m. This waterproofing not only helps to extend the life of the watch, but also allows the user to track their stats while swimming. Buttons still function while under the water and it is possible to even track the number of strokes per lap. The information given by the Garmin Forerunner 910XT for swimming is also very accurate. The watch succeeds in this area.
The real potential of this watch lies in its ability to track workouts. The Forerunner 910XT features an interval workout system that allows you to set up your workouts and specify targets for heart rate, pace, etc. This is in combination with the custom vibration alerts that can be set to alert you that you are nearing a preset level. Examples of these levels include: time spent or distance covered. These features come together to form a custom workout plan from your watch alone.
Another stand out feature of the Forerunner 910XT is the ability to display 4 different fields with 4 different screens at one time. This boasts a 16 field display when maximized in settings. The sheer volume of data that this allows you to see can be overwhelming – but that kind of tracking capability is desirable in a high-quality sports watch. Included is the option to arrange these different screens to your preference. In addition to each of these screens, the watch has default settings for 5 sports so you can manage the data easier. These sports include lap swimming, open water, biking, running and other.
The Forerunner gives you the capability to upload your workouts through a wireless connection via ANT+ to your computer for storage. This feature prevents loss of workout data and gives you the ability to review it on the larger screen. The ANT+ connection can also be used to connect to weight scales and gym equipment. This connection allows you to gain work-out specific information when you stray from the 4 preset sports.
Statistics tracking for the 910XT seems little changed from previous editions. The interface and customizable fields are similar to that of the older models. This remains functional and still completes the job it was created to do. However, you should not expect any ground-breaking changes in this area with the Forerunner.
The Forerunner is also subject to hardware issues at times. The system has had an issue previously with the device powering down while running or cycling courses. This shutdown issue has been seen since the release of the sports watch. Garmin has attempted to patch this problem with various firmware updates but the problem still sporadically occurs. It is sad to see that this problem still occurs with the device years after release. While Garmin has attempted to fix the issue, and has succeeded to some degree, this powering down error can still be frustrating.
Overall, I believe this sports watch is worth the price. The 910XT is a premier athletic watch that gives you access to a score of various stat tracking capabilities. It is built specifically for swimming, running, and cycling. These three exercises are some of the most popular and widespread. There is a great deal of value here for individuals serious in one of these exercises
However, the price point is rather high. This is not an issue for the heavily involved athletic, but it is a large amount of money for someone seeking casual walks or runs around the neighborhood. This watch does not cater to that crowd. The Forerunner is built for those individuals who are seeking to track statistics and improve performance.
It is sad to hear that the powering down issue is still occurring among the 910XTs. This is really the only downside for this watch. Garmin has been actively attempting to fix this problem since release, and has made moderate progress in that. It seems that not everyone is having the issue with the shut-down. Since the error is not universal, and since the watch is extremely impressive with tracking statistics and the water-proof technology, the Garmin Forerunner 910XT is a great fitness watch.
